The Reds got this slugfest underway in the 3rd, getting four runs on three hits and an error by Don Demeter. A Leo Cardenas double scored two, and Frank Robinson followed with a two-bagger that scored two more. In the 4th Cardenas and Robinson both hit doubles again, and it was 6-0 Cincinnati. The Phillies got one run back in their half of the 4th and another in the 5th, but in the Reds 7th a Gordy Coleman homer made it 7-2. Philadelphia wasn't done yet, however; a huge 7th inning rally netted them eight runs on three singles, a pair of doubles and a two-run homer by Clay Dalrymple, and suddenly it was 10-7 Phillies. Jack Baldschun took the mound for Philadelphia in the 8th and held Cincinnati scoreless through two to secure the come-from-behind win. Debut game: Ray Culp (CIN), Wayne Graham (PHI).

Sandy Koufax notched his first win of the series with a complete game performance featuring ten strikeouts. The Dodgers scored in the 1st as Willie Davis was hit by a pitch, stole second, stole third, then scored on a Dick Bertell error. In the 5th Bertell allowed a passed ball that put Dick Tracewski on second, from whence he scored on a Davis single to right. (Both Dodger runs were unearned.) In the Chicago 8th Lou Brock reached on a wild pitch and scored thanks to back-to-back doubles by Andre Rodgers and Billy Williams.

After three scoreless innings, the Braves put up a pair of runs in the 4th when Norm Larker was hit by a pitch and Joe Torre singled to set the table for pitcher Bob Shaw's two-run single. The Bucs cut that lead in half in the 5th and tied the game in the 6th when Roberto Clemente led off with a double and scored on a Bill Mazeroski sac fly to left. In the 8th Donn Clendenon hit a solo homer to put the Pirates ahead. Milwaukee put two men on in the top of the 9th but couldn't score.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the 4th inning with a pair of singles and an error by Mets outfielder Ed Kranepool, but it wasn't until the 5th that they scored a run, thanks to a hit batsman and a balk by Mets starter Al Jackson. In the Cardinals 8th Dick Groat led off with a homer and Gene Oliver singled in Ken Boyer to make it 3-0 Redbirds. They added another run in the 9th on Mets reliever Tracy Stallard. St. Louis starter Ray Washburn was in command all day, and the Mets never really mounted a threat, getting just four hits.

Orlando Cepeda's RBI single in the Giants 1st opened the scoring. Houston came right back in their half of the 1st with two runs on three singles and an Al Spangler walk. Pete Runnel's RBI double in the 2nd made it 3-1, and when Houston added three more runs in the 3rd, San Francisco starter Juan Marichal was done. Felipe Alou closed the gap with a two-run homer in the Giants 4th and San Francisco added another run in the 5th and it was 6-4. Howie Goss led off the Houston 5th with a single and scored on a Bob Lillis single, but the Giants jumped in front for good in the 8th thanks to a four-run homer by pinch hitter Ed Bailey. Willie Mays drew four walks on the day. The Colt 45's left eleven men stranded.

Lee Thomas scored what turned out to be the only Los Angeles run in the 1st when he hit a two-out double and came home on a Leon Wagner single. Angels starter Dean Chance made an early exit trailing 4-1 after giving up five hits -- two of them run-producing doubles -- in the Boston 3rd. The Los Angeles relievers who finished the game threw well enough to prevent Boston from scoring again, but Red Sox starter Earl Wilson pitched a complete game without allowing another Angels run. This one, as it turned out, was over early.

Coming off his All-Star year (16-8, 2.21 ERA), Hank Aguirre pitched a complete game to record his first win of '63. He got off to a rocky start, though, hitting Nellie Fox with a pitch in the Chicago 1st; Fox then scored on a Floyd Robinson single to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead. That lead didn't last long. In the bottom of the inning a double by Detroit centerfielder Bill Bruton, singles by Al Kaline and Dick McAuliffe, a stolen base by Kaline, and a passed ball allowed by Sox catcher Cam Carreon added up to two runs for the Tigers. It might have been worse had Norm Cash not been caught trying to steal home. Aguirre settled in and held Chicago in check; the Sox mounted a threat in the 6th, putting two men on with two outs, but couldn't score.

The Twins scored three runs in the 2nd, which Bob Allison opened with a double. He scored on an Earl Battey single and then George Banks hit a two-run homer. Twins starter Jim Kaat would go all nine, and for the most part stayed out of trouble. Lenny Green led off the Cleveland 8th with a solo homer, but Harmon Killebrew responded with a two-run blast in the Minnesota half of the inning. The Tribe rallied in the 9th, with catcher Mike de la Hoz hitting a two-run double, but came out on the short end of the 5-3 score.

The Yankees got off to a fast start, with Tony Kubek singling to lead off the 1st and scoring on a Bobby Richardson double. Mickey Mantle hit a two-run homer in the 3rd to make it 3-0 New York. Bill Stafford was in command, allowing just three Kansas City hits, but in the 7th he strained his right forearm and was replaced by Jim Bouton. Elston Howard hit his own two-run homer in the Yankee 8th, and New York led 5-0 going into the bottom of the 9th. The A's rallied, starting the frame with a couple of walks and tacking on several singles. It was 5-3 when Jose Tartabull hit into a 6-4-5 double play that ended the game.

A classic pitchers' duel between Claude Osteen and Robin Roberts held both teams to just two hits apiece through five innings of play. In the Senators 7th, Don Lock led off with a two-bagger and scored when Bobo Osborne belted his own double. Then Osborne scored on an Ed Brinkman single and Washington was up 2-0. The O's couldn't get a hit in the 7th or the 8th, but Jackie Brandt opened the 9th with a home run. A walk issued to Brooks Robinson ended Osteen's day. His replacement, Steve Hamilton, gave up singles to Jim Gentile and Al Smith to load the bases before walking Boog Powell to tie the game. Jim Hannan replaced Hamilton, but that availed the Senators nothing, as Jerry Adair's sac fly to center scored pinch runner Bob Saverine -- and the Orioles had a 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
