In his debut game, second baseman Pete Rose drew a walk and subsequently scored Cincinnati's first run when Frank Robinson homered. The Reds went up 4-0 in the 2nd when Leo Cardenas hit a two-run single to left. The Pirates hit into a twin killing in each of the first four innings, and were held scoreless until Donn Clendenon's solo homer in the 4th. Gordy Coleman also hit a solo homer off reliever Tommie Sisk in the Cincinnati 6th. In the 7th, Reds starter Jim O'Toole gave up a single to Bob Bailey, balked, a walk issued to Jim Pagliaroni, and then commited an error that allowed pinch-hitter Elmo Plaskett to reach and Bailey to score. Neither team got a hit or a run from that point on, and the Reds won 5-2. Winning pitcher O'Toole went nine innings -- and only got one strikeout.

The Orioles took an early 3-0 lead when a Jim Gentile solo homer was followed by Boog Powell's two-run bomb in the 2nd. The Senators got a run in the 5th when Bobo Osborne singled, Don Leppert doubled, and Ed Brinkman (debut game) hit a one-out grounder to score Osborne. Baltimore ace Steve Barber lasted until the 9th, when he was replaced by Stu Miller after serving up a two-bagger to Minnie Minoso. The Senators were unable to capitalize, stranding two in the last frame, and losing a 3-1 decision. Miller got the first of his 27 saves on the season. The game lasted just two hours and nine minutes.
