This was a scoreless game until the 5th, when the Angels collected four runs on just two hits. Jim Fregosi reached on an Eddie Bressoud error, Albie Pearson drew a walk, Billy Moran singled, and Lee Thomas hit a two-run homer. Boston cut the 4-0 LAA lead by one in the 7th, which Carl Yastrzemski led off with a solo homer. But that was all Ken McBride allowed, as he went on to record a complete game victory.

The Tigers had a big 2nd inning, as Gus Triandos led off with a homer, and then five of the next Detroit batters hitting singles, chasing Chicago starter Ray Herbert and making it 4-0. The White Sox battled back in their half of the 3rd, closing the gap to 4-3, thanks in part to Joe Cunningham's two-run triple. Detroit got three singles and a run in the 5th, but the White Sox took the lead in the 7th, getting four runs -- three of them on a Pete Ward home run. They held on to win behind the pitching of Juan Pizarro and 40-year-old knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm. (Debut game: Dick Egan, DET-p, and Bob Dustal, DET-p.)

Joe Pepitone hit a solo homer in the 2nd to give the Yankees an early lead, to which they added in the 4th with a two-run round-tripper off the bat of Elston Howard. New York blew it wide open with four runs in the 5th thanks to a triple (Bobby Richardson), a double (Pepitone), a stolen base (Tony Kubek) and three singles. The A's got a run in the 8th on a Billy Bryan homer and another in the 9th when Chuck Essegian hit one out of the park. Ralph Terry pitched a complete game, giving up six hits while fanning two.

Phillies starter Art Mahaffey pitched a complete game, holding the Reds to just four hits and striking out ten. Cincinnati got on the board in the 9th when Frank Robinson singled, advanced to second on a Gordy Coleman grounder, and scored when Johnny Edwards hit a double into center field. But the Phillies had already scored two runs on Joey Jay, thanks largely to the efforts of outfielders Johnny Callison and Tony Gonzalez.

Johnny Romano led off the Indians 1st with a solo homer, but Lenny Green answered with a solo shot of his own in the Twins 3rd to tie the game 1-1. Fred Whitfield and Max Alvis hit home runs in the 4th to put the Indians back on top, but again the Twins knotted it when Battey doubled in a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning. Woodie Held broke the tie in the 7th with a two-run dinger, making it 5-3 Indians. Vic Power's solo homer in the 8th cut the Cleveland lead in half. Mudcat Grant retired the side in the Twins 9th to preserve the win. Debut game: Vic Davalillo (CLE), Tony Martinez (CLE) and Jimmie Hall (MIN).

The game had become a pitchers' duel until the Dodgers' 6th, when Willie Davis tripled into right field -- and scored when Cubs hurler Larry Jackson balked with Tommy Davis at bat. That gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. They would add another run in the 7th and two more courtesy of a 9th inning double by Ken McMullen. But that was just icing on the cake because even though the wily Don Drysdale allowed eleven Chicago hits he was always able to pitch out of trouble; the Cubs left ten men stranded. (Debut game for Nate Oliver, LAD.)

Mack Jones scored in the Braves 2nd; hit by a pitch, he moved to second on a Norm Larker single, to third when Bob Friend balked, and scored on a Del Crandall grounder. The Pirates tied it in the 6th with a solo homer by Smoky Burgess and took the lead in the 7th when Bob Bailey hit his own solo dinger. Hank Aaron led off the Braves 9th with a single and went to third on an Eddie Mathews single, scoring when Mack Jones stroked a double to left. But the Pirates answered back in the bottom of the 9th to win the game with a run on three consecutive singles off Milwaukee reliever Bob Hendley.

The Giants scored four runs on five hits, including a homer by Orlando Cepeda and a two-run triple by pitcher Jack Sanford, in the 2nd inning, the beginning of a long ordeal for Houston. A Willie Mays homer in the 3rd knocked Houston starter Turk Farrell out of the game. Down 6-0 in the 6th, three consecutive singles led to two runs for the Colt 45's, but any thoughts of a comeback vanished in the 8th when Willie McCovey and Felipe Alou homered off reliever George Brunet. Houston's pitching staff allowed 17 hits in the game. Al Spangler got three of Houston's five hits. (Debut game for Rusty Staub, HOU, Brock Davis, HOU.)

St. Louis starter Ernie Broglio pitched a two-hit shutout in which he walked a pair and struck out eight. The Mets reached second base only once in the game. The Cards scored two runs in the first on four hits and two Mets errors. In the 3rd, two balks by Mets starter Roger Craig, combined with four more St. Louis hits, gave the Cards a 4-0 lead. In the 6th the Redbirds collected three more runs on three hits and a balk, this one committed by Mets reliever Dan Rowe (debut game). Jerry Burright, New York's second baseman, got both of the Mets hits.
