The O's struck first when Jerry Adair hit a lead-off double in the 3rd and then scored on a Dick Brown single. Mickey Mantle's solo homer in the Yankees 4th tied the game, but Baltimore went back out in front in their next frame when Boog Powell jacked a two-run blast out of the park to make it 3-1. Orioles starter Milt Pappas got into trouble on several occasions; he hit Ellie Howard with a pitch and walked Hector Lopez to start the Yankees 5th, and in the 6th the Yankees juiced the bases. But New York always failed to capitalize, and the O's turned a couple of crucial twin-killings.Powell's second homer of the night, a solo shot in the 7th, made it 4-1, and so it would remain.

Washington starter Tom Cheney fanned ten in a complete game shutout of the Red Sox. (Cheney's all-time record was 21 K's in a 12 September 1962 game with Baltimore.) The Bosox managed just one hit -- by Eddie Bressoud -- in the 4th. Washington's Don Leppert had a big day, going 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 5 ribbies, hitting a solo home run in the 4th and a two-run dinger in the 6th. In the 8th he hit yet another homer, making three for the day. (He would hit just three more home runs in all of 1963, his All-Star year.)

The Chisox drew first blood -- a Floyd Robinson lead-off homer in the 4th. Albie Pearson singled in the Angels 5th, reached second on a Moran groundout, and scored when Lee Thomas hit a two-bagger to center. The game remained tied until the 6th, when two walks issied by Angels starter Bo Belinsky, a passed ball, and a single by Robinson made it 3-1 White Sox. Chicago's Pete Ward hit two triples (leading off the 3rd and the 9th) but didn't score either time.

Tigers starter Don Mossi pitched three complete games in '63, and this was one of them. He held the Tribe to just two hits. In fact, the Cleveland lineup went three-up, three-down in each of the first six innings. The Tigers scored two runs on four singles in the 1st and added another pair in the 4th on a two-run single by Mossi himself. In the 6th Mossi hit a one-out single and later scored. The Indians got their (unearned) run in the 9th -- too little, too late.

Yet another complete game by one of today's winning pitchers. In this one, Chicago's Dick Ellsworth shut out a Dodgers lineup that included Willie Davis, Frank "Hondo" Howard and Bill "Moose" Skowron, holding Los Angeles to just three hits. Dodgers starter Johnny Podres did well, too, allowing eight hits and two runs. The first Cubs score came in the 3rd when Ron Santo hit a two-bagger that plated Lou Brock. In the Cubs 6th Santo led off with a single, reached second on a Dodgers error, got to third when Nelson Mathews made an out to right, then scored when Ken Hubbs singled, making it 2-0.

Braves ace Warren Spahn pitched a complete game, allowing just one run -- a solo homer off the bat of Duke Snider in the Mets 2nd. In the Braves 3rd, Frank Bolling tripled in Ty Cline and then scored when Mets hurler Jay Hook threw a wild pitch, making it 2-1 Braves. Joe Torre led off the Braves 5th with a double, Roy McMillan singled, and Cline doubled to score Torre, while Hank Aaron followed to single in McMillan and Cline. Aaron's solo dinger in the 7th made it 6-1, the final score.

Another dominant pitching performance today was Billy O'Dell's complete game handling of the Colt 45's, in which he allowed just three hits -- two of them by Carl Warwick -- and one (unearned) run courtesy of two Giants fielding errors in the Houston 1st. Three hits, a walk, and a Houston error resulted in a three-run second for San Francisco. Houston reliever Conrad Cardinal debuted in the 6th and gave up one run in three innings. Fellow reliever Chris Zachary -- also making his debut -- issued a walk to Willie Mays to open the Giants 9th; Willie McCovey singled and Orlando Cepeda homered to make it 7-1.
